Friday Fantasies: My Avatar Is Showing!

Despite my growing to-do list, I’m happy to report that, for two nights in a row, Dan and I have taken the time to venture out with friends. On Thursday night, we went out for dinner and drinks with a pal and her new boyfriend (who, interestingly enough, spent several years as Anne Rice’s executive assistant), and last night, we had a similar "date" with another couple. It was a lot of fun, although I’m paying for it now – awake in the wee hours to tackle my long list of tasks.

But, hey, everyone deserves a break from time to time – even me. In fact, despite the fact that I have to turn in a sample chapter of Moon Florida Keys before Christmas, Dan and I have every intention of doing fun things this week, including the Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival on Sunday, a Harrah’s buffet feast on Thursday with my mom, a raw oyster extravaganza at my dad’s house next week, and, of course, an opening day viewing of James Cameron’s much-anticipated (at least in our family) Avatar. Obviously, we’re working around our “stupid diets,” but more importantly, we’re going to see Avatar in all its 3-D IMAX glory! We can’t wait!

Both Dan and I are huge James Cameron fans. We’ve loved every theatrical film that he’s directed from The Terminator (1984) to Titanic (1997), and as with many fans, we’ve been waiting breathlessly for his latest film for well over a decade. And while I admit to having some initial skepticism about Avatar, the theatrical trailer has since convinced me otherwise. In fact, I’ve felt a wave of chills every time I’ve seen it.

So, who else will be there on opening day?

Yeah, I wasn't overly thrilled by the initial previews for Avatar, but after hearing more details and reading the first reviews, I'm becoming more and more stoked. Hopefully it'll live up to the hype (which, in today's day and age, would be pretty impressive).

My hubby really, really wants to see it, so yes, I'll be there. (Hey, he went to New Moon at midnight, now that's love!)Can't wait for us to all see it and share our thoughts.

My husband and I rarely go to movies *sigh*. I doubt we''ll make it to this one until it's "Grand Opening" in DVD! :)

I must admit, even though that's totally not my genre of films, I'm wanting to see Avitar too. Probably not until it comes out on video, but it does look like one of those films that's a must see on the big screne. BTW, saw Julie and Julia last ngiht, and really liked it :-). It's the first PG-13 movie I've let my kids watch. They enjoyed it too.

Glad you got some social time, and good luck with the Moon FL gig!

Bane - I wasn't overly thrilled either at first. Dan kept looking at me as though I had lobsters crawling outta my ears. Finally, the Cameron magic won me over. :-) Still, I'm with you re: the hype. Sure hope the flick lives up to it.

P.S. BTW, I just heard that the final Twilight book is going to be split into two flicks. If you'd read the book, you'd know how ridiculous that is!

Steph - Yep, I'd have to agree. If he suffered through New Moon with you at midnight, you simply must return the favor with Avatar. :-) As for my dear hubby, he was willing to see New Moon (as long as we paid for something else), but ultimately, I'm the one who decided not to go.

Shannon - Oh, don't feel bad. Dan and I see way more DVDs than we do theatrical releases, but this is a special one for us. I think it's going to be better in 3-D IMAX - it was meant for it anyway.

Becky - Yeah, I think it's a must-see on the big screen, for us little movie nerds anyway. ;-) Thanks for the review on Julie and Julia - that's definitely still on our list. Thanks, too, for the well wishes re: the Keys. And no worries about the typos!

I'm a skeptic still. I'll have to wait and see what kind of reviews it gets and whether or not my friends like it before I'll pay to see it in a theater. I imagine I will rent it someday regardless. :)

Laura, my wife definitely though the 4th one jumped the shark (um, that happened after the great glade sparkle incident), but still enjoyed it... she, too, was a bit surprised... but, hey, it's a cash cow (and makes me think about similes about Mormons and babies :)

Hi, Natalie! I can understand the skepticism. As I wrote above, I hope it can live up to the hype. Most of the reviews have been excellent so far, though, so I'm hopeful.

Bane - Yes, the great glade anticlimax was pretty horrendous. Frankly, Dan and I think it's just as stupid to split the last TWILIGHT book as it is to split the last HP one. But, whatever, the Saints won! The Saints won!

What? They're splitting Breaking Dawn? That is stupid. Blech. Same with HP, although, admittedly, I tend to like those movies more, I'm still good with 7 instead of 8.

I know, Steph. Crazy, huh? I think it's just plain greedy, splitting the final books in both series. Not enough happens in either to justify it. So, it must be for money alone.

Blech indeed.
