Friday Fantasies: Desperate for Desperate Housewives

For a long time now, I've wondered about the hype surrounding the salacious prime-time television show Desperate Housewives. In my mind, the popular soap opera never seemed like the kind of show I'd like. But being sick can really upend a person's tastes and priorities, and it just so happened that this week, while I've been recovering from the flu, the Lifetime network has been running episodes from the fourth season – episodes that just so happen to feature Nathan Fillion, one of my favorite actors. And I must admit – in the haze of sinus overload, I've found the melodrama, intrigue, and fairy tale-like vibe strangely alluring – and I've even begun to entertain the notion of renting the earlier seasons. Please, somebody, shoot me.

I've never seen it. But oddly enough, my father loves it! :)

I'd love to help you out Laura, but sadly, I'm laughing far too hard to get a steady bead on you. I hope you're happy now--you made me snort. *still laughing* So sorry!

That's hilarious, Shannon! Maybe I have good taste, after all.

Oh, Deb, making you laugh is one of the highlights of my day. I'm glad I could service you yet again. ;-)

There's a reasons it's popular. Believe it or not (and I can't believe I'm admitting this), but there was a time in junior highish during summer when I got into Days of our Lives -- not the proudest moment of my life, but there's something to silly soap operas that connects on some level, no matter how much we want to scorn them (well, except for Twilight, that anti-connected on so many levels).

Yes, Bane, lots of folks love sexy intrigue - and DH has that in spades. I just thought I'd feel a little icky watching it, but strangely enough, I don't.

As for your brief obsession with DOOL, I'm afraid I had the same obsession when I was about that age - but I blame my two grandmas, who both watched the show religiously. I knew more about Bo and Hope than was healthy for an adolescent. Glad to know I'm not alone - in that or in my disgust with the Twitards (incidentally, I have yet to see NEW MOON - aren't you proud of me?).

I wound up watching General Hospital for years in much the same way. I quit when I finally got a decent full time job and found myself not really watching the weekly tapings. I almost back slide occasionally when I see one of my once-favorite characters on the cover of soap opera digest - in the same type situation, it seems, that I left them in years ago.

Now I'm addicted to CSI, Criminal Minds - cop shows. We all gotta follow something I guess.

Thanks, Donna, for making me feel a little less freakish. ;-)

And I'm with you re: cop shows. I'm a big fan of CSI (especially Vegas w/Grissom), CRIMINAL MINDS, NCIS, CASTLE, BONES, and the like. They amuse me, and I like to be amused.

Fever can make you do some strange things. Seems like you've been suffering from this nasty bug long enough. Hope you feel better soon.

You're so right, Wordy. Fever CAN make you do some strange things. In fact, now that I'm feeling better, I find that my fascination with DH might have been short-lived after all. Phew.

I've only caught bits and pieces of the show, myself. I've never been all that interested. I figure I can always get sucked in by ordering the 1st season and watching it all at once. I'm a little OCD that way, if I don't see a show from the beginning I refuse to watch. (The kind of show that has a running story line, anyway.)

I'm pretty OCD, too, Beth, which is why I try to avoid getting hooked by new shows. It's bad enough I watch as many as I do - and I'm with you re: starting at the beginning. I find it hard to start watching in the middle. Thank goodness for DVDs - I never would've caught up with THE SOPRANOS without 'em!
