Thoughtful Thursday: Ever on the Move

You’re not going to believe this, but we’re moving again. Yes, it’s unbelievable, but absolutely true.

When we first arrived in the New Orleans area last month, the film festival was only a few weeks away, and we didn’t have much time to look for a place. So, we had to settle for a temporary spot just outside the city, while we prepared for the festival. But, now that the festival is over, it’s time to relocate to a better locale in the French Quarter – which, happily, we found yesterday.

Of course, with how often we come to New Orleans, you’d think we’d already have a permanent apartment, but you’d be wrong. Goodness knows it would make life easier if we didn’t always have to search for a sublet every time we ventured into town, but we have yet to find a permanent situation – mainly because we’re always slammed with festival duties. Hopefully, that’ll change this spring, when we return from our adventures – or should I say misadventures? – in the Florida Keys and Los Angeles. But, for now, we’ll be moving – tomorrow. Won’t the kitty be pleased?

Although, as I’ve previously reported, I’m not a fan of packing and unpacking, I do love the fact that Dan and I have called so many places home. In the decade we’ve been together, we’ve lived in over twenty different domiciles, from a flat in the English countryside to a roving RV to a French Quarter apartment with a lovely courtyard (pictured here with Dan, my stepmom, and my dad). It might sound crazy to others – including our parents – but we truly embrace our nomadic lifestyle. The scenery is ever evolving, and boredom is never an issue for us. As a bonus, when the apocalypse comes in 2012, we’ll be well versed in hitting the road. Of course, if the latest Roland Emmerich flick has it right, there won’t be anywhere to run – at least here in America.

Have fun moving this weekend. Hopefully you didn't unpack too much of your stuff, right?

That is nuts! I can't imagine moving so much! But I hope you love your new place :)

Thanks, Steph! And, yes, one of the saving graces of being a longtime nomad is that you never unpack more than you need!

Moving a lot is also a good way to keep from getting too bogged down with excess possessions. We’re in the process of getting rid of stuff for another move also—it’s really quite liberating!

I extremely dislike packing and unpacking but like you, I'm a big fan of moving around and seeing different places for extended time. As long as I have a home base somewhere I'm fine ... and adventurous.

Good luck with the move! Glad you found a place. Yes, moving a lot really keeps you from being too much of a slave to your "stuff". BTW, I'd love to hear more about your England and RV adventures!

I hate moving...There's nothing worse in my mind. Good luck...I'm glad it's you and not me. LOL...

Oh, how exciting to be moving into the French Quarter! And the Florida Keys are perfect for the winter! Moving can be a good thing. Have a great weekend and lots of fun in your new place!

Our family motto is--three moves is as good as a fire...

Hang in there Laura.

Natalie - I do, I do! I do love my new place. It's on Ursulines in the French Quarter, between Dauphine and Bourbon, which means it's only a block from the Quartermaster, an awesome 24-hour deli and convenience store that feeds all the late-night Quarter weirdos, including us! P.S. And, yes, Natalie, we are nuts - but we wouldn't have it any other way. ;-)

Bridget - Wait, what?! You and T are moving?! Where to? Are you leaving Michigan? Darn it all! I knew we should've gotten together before I headed south...

Laura Martone said...

Oh, Bridget, I should add that, yes, one advantage of moving is the purging oneself of excess belongings. Although it still feels like we have way too much stuff.

Regina - Glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes experiencing new places (or old places in a new way) but abhors packing! If I could pay someone to do it, I would.

Thanks, Becky! It went pretty smoothly. As I wrote above, we found a cool apartment on Ursulines. Nice landlady, kitties allowed, and just a block from an all-night deli. The "stuff" will be unpacked tomorrow... for now, we're eating Angeli's pizza and watching old DEXTER episodes on the laptop. :-) P.S. Dan just bought me a negative scanner, which means I can finally upload my England/RV photos, so, yes, I will definitely be sharing those adventures soon!

Bane - Well, harumph. I'll have you know that Ruby the Devil Cat is quite happy in her new abode. She's already sniffed every corner, jumped on every surface, and tracked little dirty paw prints (courtesy of a damp bathtub) throughout the place. Sigh.

Thanks, Jen! I'm glad it's me, too. I relish the change of scenery. And a good beer usually helps me forget the packing... and unpacking.

Thanks, Marguerite! I'm pretty excited about living in the Quarter... again. Can't seem to get enough - despite my parents' concerns about crime.

That's hilarious, Deb! That might as well be Dan's motto, too - he believes that every time you move, you should cut your stuff in half. I'm the packrat in the family, that's for darn sure.
